Members of the Hong Kong branch were delighted to welcome our President, Captain E M Scott and his lady to Hong Kong during March 2002.
During the six-day visit, Captain Scott attended a lunch hosted by the HK Shipowners Association, and spent an afternoon at the HK Polytechnic University. Branch committee members Arthur Bowring (HKSOA) and Detlef Nielsen (HKPU) were in charge of the arrangements.
Branch Chairman Duncan Telfer was, unfortunately, overseas on business but arranged an excellent seafood dinner on Lamma Island. The preceding harbour cruise aboard the luxurious 'EQV' was kindly arranged by Martin Cresswell, and set the scene for an excellent evening. Martin Scott is a seagoing President, and members enjoyed his tales of life aboard sailing passenger vessels. Undoubtedly his finest achievement was to win the affections of Carole, whose charm and sense of humour contributed to a most enjoyable outing.
Captain Scott's final day of official activities was a busy one, which commenced with a visit to the Director of Marine, Mr. SY Tsui. This was followed by a tour of the new Vessel Traffic Centre and Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in the company of Mr. KM Lee, Assistant Director of Marine, after which Mr. Tsui hosted a private lunch of superb Cantonese food.
In the evening, Captain Scott addressed a branch meeting and gave an illustrated talk on the work of the Nautical Institute and its plans for the future. In attendance were the Chairman and immediate past Chairman of the Joint Branch in Hong Kong, and members were delighted that Captain Scott's presence was the catalyst which permitted us to forge even closer links with the Joint Branch.
To mark his visit, the branch presented Captain Scott with a model of a Star ferry, suitably engraved.
It is hoped that Captain Scott's trip to Hong Kong will mark the beginning of a closer relationship between the branch and our headquarters in London.
